Search on in Caddo Parish for suspect who ditched stolen truck and fled

KEITHVILLE, LA (KSLA) -

Sheriff's deputies have called off the search for a suspected truck thief in Caddo Parish, who reportedly ditched the vehicle as officers approached Thursday afternoon.

A few days after the truck was reported stolen in Bossier Parish, the owner says he spotted someone at the wheel who did not have permission to take it. "I had a full tank of gas, I was ready to follow my truck to Baton Rouge if I needed to," said the owner. Instead he followed the truck to Keithville, once the driver parked, the truck owner parked his own vehicle across the driveway, blocking him in.

That's when he confronted the individual, who he describes as a 30-year-old man, saying, "Nice truck," to which the suspect answered, "It's new," but when Caddo sheriff's deputies showed up, the suspect fled on foot to the woods behind the property.

The owner of the truck says he had loaned his truck to his son-in-law's business.

The search in a wooded area near Barron and Presswood roads was called off around 5:30 p.m. as dark began to fall. Caddo Parish deputies say they believe they know who they are looking for, and they're hoping cold temperatures overnight will help flush him out of hiding.

The suspect's name has not yet been released.

Debra Barlow leases a pasture for her horses near where the truck was found and explained, she helped her landlord post a craiglist ad to lease out the property where the stolen truck was found parked. Barlow said shortly after the storage building was rented out, vehicles began showing up on the property. The landlord informed Barlow to keep the ad up on craiglist because the renter hadn't paid his rent yet. She believes that new renter is the culprit, "I've never seen the man, I just know that he keeps that area full of vehicles that I can't even get in to take care of my horses." said Barlow.

Sheriff's Deputies could be seen taking pictures of the other pieces of equipment and vehicles on the property.

Investigators say they have also obtained a search warrant for storage shed not far from where the truck was abandoned.
