About 1,000 people attended Tuesday's pep rally and fireworks show, sending off the C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets to their first state championship game in 5 decades.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
C.E. Byrd High School held a big pep rally Tuesday night that included a fireworks show for the No. 2-seeded Yellow Jackets before they travel to New Orleans to battle the No. 5-seeded Rummel Raiders in the LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic.
About 1,000 attended the enthusiastic sendoff.
It's the Yellow Jackets' first trip to the Superdome, and it's thanks to newly-created Division I state title. Byrd was moved to a new playoff bracket over the summer called "select teams," which includes private schools or teams like Byrd's that have more than 20% of their enrollment coming in from outside of the district. That's why they're not playing for a 5A title.
"Everybody's excited. The teachers the students. The community, everybody you talk to. I've talked to some people and got messages from people that went to Byrd years and years ago and talked about the tradition of the school and it has been such a long time since they've made it this far and I think it's just excitement in the air from everybody."
It's been 50 years since the Byrd Yellow Jackets have played in a state championship game.
Kickoff for the Division I State Championship is set for Thursday, Dec. 13 at 8:30 p.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
