West Shreveport church joins Holiday Food Drive

The Northwest Louisiana Food Bank in Shreveport reports about a 20% reduction in donations compared to this time last year. Martha Marak from the food bank says the organization is also seeing an increase in demand following the reduction in food stamps that hit families back in November. Some families saw as many as $36 fewer dollars a month available.

Since food banks deliver millions of pounds of food each year to the hungry, the shelves of those food banks can somewhat be used as a measurement of the community's ability to feed those in need. And to some, it's a surprise that there is a need.

"Yeah, I think a lot of people might just think hunger is reserved for the 3rd world. And it's not, it's in our community," said Associate Pastor for Word of God Ministries, Ben Pirtle. He sees the need first hand.

"Well I know even inside the church, we get phone calls every single day of people who are hungry, and in need of help," said Pirtle.

He says his church wants to be there for the members, and through the KSLA News 12 Holiday Food Drive, the community.

"We've opened up our church all day on Wednesday so that everyone can look in their pantry, grab a few extra items, they can sacrifice for those in need," said Pirtle.

And it's that sacrifice Pirtle believes is in line with a well-known decree of his faith: It is better to give than to receive. "Jesus commanded his disciples to find those in need and give sacrificially and I think it's a key to happiness in a way."

Word of God Ministries is just one of several drop-off locations for donations.

The one-day food drive begins at 6am and goes until 7pm tomorrow (Wednesday).

You can donate canned goods, as well as other non-perishable items. You can drop off your donations at KSLA News 12, at 1812 Fairfield Avenue in Shreveport.

Other locations include John Harvey Toyota in Bossier city, Legacy car dealership in Natchitoches, Marshall Mobile Homes in Marshall Texas, and Gregg Orr Classic Auto Park in Texarkana Texas.
