GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) -

Police have confirmed that a Goochland man who set his home on fire and shot himself during a standoff has died.

The incident started around 9 p.m. Monday on Fayette Road; that's about 15 minutes away from where Rt. 288 meets Broad Street.

According to Goochland deputies, 42-year-old Michael Fuller threatened his wife and three children with a handgun. His wife was able to escape with one child before police got on the scene.

Negotiating teams arrived and spoke with Fuller on the cell phone while his other two kids escaped. Then around 11 p.m., police say Fuller set the couch on fire. Police were able to pull the couch out of the home, and Fuller ended the standoff by shooting himself.

Fuller was taken to VCU Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died. His wife and three kids, ages 11, 13, and 14 are all okay.

Police say Fuller was arrested in June 2013 and June 2012 for assault and battery on his wife.
