Gold coin wrapped in note found in Salvation Army red kettle

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Over the weekend in Owensboro, officials with the Salvation Army were thrilled to find a gold coin in one of their red kettles.

It was found wrapped up in a note that said it was from: 'Someone who loves Jesus.' The note says the coin was donated in memory of an Owensboro woman who passed away in 2011.

The donation was made outside the Frederica Street Kroger. We're told the coin weighs an ounce and is worth $1,200.

"It's going to help us feed people, keep people in their homes. It's going to help us help people pay their utility bills their payments, give them food baskets. It's going to help do a lot," said Lt. Nathan Jones, the Corps officer.

Officials say this is the first gold coin the Salvation Army in Owensboro has ever received and it could not have come at a better time.
