SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -
On a recent Monday evening, many of the courts at the Bossier Park Tennis Center were occupied. That's because five teams from the Shreveport/Bossier area won the Louisiana adult tennis state tournament and are now training to compete at the sectional tournament in March.
"We won the final match in a very close one," says Tammie Harris, "but we hung in there and pulled it out."

Ann Wimberly is a team captain for one of the state champion teams. "It was amazing we took 9 of our 12 local Shreveport combo 5.5 winners from Shreveport and we won all of our matches, it was amazing work from my ladies, we had a great time, I'm just really proud to have gotten the opportunity and now we get to go to sectionals"

Many of these men and women don't play for the competition. They simply play for the love the game. "Tennis is a good sport its fun," says Antone' Hill. "It's interesting it makes you think outside the box and hopefully I'll be playing until the day I die."

"It's a life sport," adds Harris. "I started my son at 3 and we have all ages up to 80 and 90 years old that are out here playing."

"Tennis is a sport that you can go out and readily compete right away," says tennis pro Alana Engleman, who says she has seen so many benefits come from the sport and hopes that the seasoned players can serve up new inspiration for the next group of tennis champions. "Tennis is nowadays, since all of the modifications have been changed, it's now a sport that you can go out and readily compete right away."

"They haven't had enough opportunities to go out and compete with their peers at the same level of kids and be able to actually play matches and experience that and get success in that.

Tennis is a relatively inexpensive sport. It costs about $2.50 to use the courts, plus there are pros on hand if you need training. Shreveport/Bossier also has several tennis centers.
