Christmas yard display vandalized, homeowners watch it on camera

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

An elaborate Christmas yard display at a home on Louie Street in Lake Charles is the target of a string of neighborhood vandalism after three young men vandalized the yard late Saturday night.

"It takes us quite a bit of time to come out and do this, and we do it for the kids" said Stacey Clement who lives in the home.  "No child should have to see what we saw this morning".

The neighborhood is no stranger to phantom vandalism.  In October, we reported on a rash of break-ins at a doctor's office just across the street.  For this family, it's become personal.

Two months ago after their cars were broken into, they installed security cameras.  What's captured from Saturday night's act is shocking.  In the video you see three young men walking onto the front yard.  One of them takes down a Christmas tree.  A few minutes later, another body slams a Ferris wheel display.

"There's duck tape now on the inside because that ball had wires all out... so we duck taped it back together to make it work again" explained Clement.

A few minutes later, the video shows, the vandals are back.  This time going after Santa Claus himself.  Santa stayed safe, but the man leaves his face wide open to the camera.

"Everybody knows everybody here and we try to look out for each other" said Clement.  "We just don't want these punks coming in and stealing and tearing up our stuff that we work hard for" she said.

The family has filed police reports with both city police and the sheriff's office, but they find themselves asking, when will anything be done to stop this.

"Something's got to stop or people will start taking matters into their own hands" Clement said.
