Texarkana prepares for ice storm

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

The City of Texarkana is preparing for the impending threat of winter weather Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Freezing rain, sleet, ice and snow are expected in parts of SE Oklahoma, NE Texas and SW Arkansas over the next 3 days. A wintry mix has already been reported in Oklahoma.

Emergency management officials are encouraging residents to monitor local weather reports, sign up for Code Red weather alerts through the city web site, and stay informed on road conditions and closures.

"The best advice we can give everyone in the event of ice accumulation is to stay at home," Fire Chief Eric Schlotter said. "Our major threats will be icy roadways, especially on bridges, possible power outages or downed trees. Please stay safe and stay off the roads if possible."

City officials met with emergency coordinators Thursday morning to finalize plans for the 72 hour weather event forecasted for the Texarkana area. The Texarkana, Texas police and fire departments, public works department, and Texarkana Water Utilities will work with other area agencies to combine resources in the case of a major weather event.

They say crews will be working throughout the weekend as needed to clear roadways of debris, ensure traffic runs smoothly and utilities are intact.

Foreman schools will be closed Friday as a result of the potential for dangerous road conditions. Click here to see updated school closure listings.

The first-ever Live United Bowl and all associated events originally scheduled for Friday, December 7 at Crossroads Business Park in Texarkana, AR have been postponed.

Organizers say both Universities and the Live United Bowl committee are working diligently to reschedule the game and as soon as a workable time is found for both teams, a press release will be sent. "Our concern is with the safety of the teams and the fans traveling and the decision to postpone this event was extremely difficult, but one that we think is absolutely the right thing to do," says Allen Brown, Chairman of the Texarkana Live United Bowl.  "There has been much work and preparation for this historical event but above all, we want to offer a safe atmosphere for all involved."
