AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Alright Alabama fans, you've endured the rumors for years that Nick Saban was a banana peel away from splitting for his next big challenge. Sit back. It's apparently Auburn's turn.

Speculation is heating up that Auburn's Gus Malzahn, in just his first year as a head coach on the Plains and only his second year as a head coach, will take 'The Gus Bus' on a trip to a new team out west.

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel says in a new article that a source tells him Malzahn has privately told friends that he would like the top job at Texas. Thamel's thoughts on the matter are spelled out in his article's headline: "If Texas calls, Gus Malzahn should jump ship to leave Auburn".

While speculation about Saban leaving Alabama has focused on him needing a new challenge, speculation of Malzahn's leaving is a bit different.

As Thamel sees it, Malzahn should "bolt" because "History tells us that Auburn coaches - no matter how successful - don't have long and stable professional careers."

When asked about the report, Malzahn said "I'm tickled to death to be at Auburn."

Athletic Director Jay Jacobs has said he will discuss a new contract with Malzahn at the end of the season.

Malzahn, who currently makes $2.3 million, is one of the lowest paid coaches in the SEC.

To date, Saban is still at Alabama, Mack Brown is still at Texas and Gus Malzahn is preparing to take his 11-1, No. 3 ranked Tigers to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta in hopes of riding it to the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena.

LSU went back to work this week in preparation for the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame. A win would be nice, but this is also a chance to get some freshman playing time to get ready for 2018. Well it'll come in practice only. "Those guys will get more reps. So I'll give them a couple of more reps at the end of a team period. It's sending the wrong message to our football team.
