TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Pima County Sheriff's officials confirmed a reportedly suicidal man who was in a standoff with the SWAT team on Monday is dead.

Deputy Courtney Rodriguez with the Pima County Sheriff's Department said a SWAT situation began around 9:30 a.m. in the 5200 block of N. Crowley Lane. A news release from the Pima County Sheriff's Department says a woman called 911 to have authorities check on her roommate.

Deputies said Scott Mitchell, 46, threatened to kill himself and the PCSD officials evacuated nearby homes.  The Mental Health Support Team responded to the scene as well. MHST has confirmed that a mental health evaluation court order existed for Mitchell.

Authorities sent a robot into the home, near La Cholla and Curtis, and Mitchell reacted by shooting at deputies.

They returned fire and hit him, police said. He was pronounced dead around 3 p.m.  The sergeant who fired at him, Sgt. Derek Tyra, has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation. Sgt. Tyra is a fourteen year veteran of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators say they will re-create the scene once the sun comes up.
