KSLA News 12 Editorial: Dec. 2nd-Top Smokers

An article in MSN Healthy Living caught my attention. It listed the top states in the nation for cigarette smoking.

Two states in the ArkLaTex made the list: Louisiana and Arkansas.

In Arkansas, about 27% of adults smoke. The national average is 20%. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebee is concerned about the impact of second hand smoke. In fact, there is a state law that prohibits an adult from smoking in a car with children under the age of 14.

In Louisiana more than one in four adults smoke, again one of the highest percentages in the country. Louisiana does have a similar law as Arkansas concerning smoking around children in cars.

Despite the law, I still see it happen. I bet you do, too.

By any measure smoking is not the best thing you can do for yourself or for those around you. It would be great if over the next few years both Louisiana and Arkansas were removed from the Top Smoker List.

Let me know what you think. I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.

Be on the lookout for kids. They seem to dart out from everywhere. They are certainly not looking out for you; so please look out for them.
