A man is in custody in Shreveport this evening after a wild chase in downtown Shreveport.
According to Shreveport police, it all started around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon on Texas Avenue near Hope Street, right outside the police station. A sergeant saw a Mercedes SUV roll over and land back on its wheels while apparently attempting a u-turn, sideswiping a parked vehicle in the process.
That's when things got strange. Police say the officer tried to check on the driver to make sure he was okay, but the man allegedly waved the officer off and sped away.
The sergeant followed, briefly chasing the Mercedes, until the man stopped on the Common Street bridge. There, officers on the scene say the man got out of the SUV, hopped up on the hood and appeared to start dancing, before trying to jump from the bridge.
Officers pulled him back. In the process, police say the man committed aggravated battery on a police officer. After a brief struggle, the man was taken into custody without further incident.
He has been identified as 33-year-old Christopher Jones. He was taken to University Health. Police say once he is released, he will be charged with aggravated flight, felony battery on a police officer and hit and run.
