Matthew 25: Ministries responds to tornado devastation in Illinois

(FOX19) -

A local humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization is responding to the devastation left behind in Sunday's tornadoes in Illinois.

On Sunday, a series of tornadoes touched down in northern Illinois, with the towns of Washington and Pekin in Tazewell County near Peoria experiencing the worst damage. Entire blocks were destroyed and at least six people have died as a result of the tornadoes.

A team from Matthew 25: Ministries left Monday and set up a central distribution center outside of Kroger in Washington, IL. The team handed out P&G personal care kits, baby wipes, diapers, dishwashing liquid, paper towels, toilet paper and dog food. Additionally, they distributed Cintas dust masks, safety glasses antiseptic wipes, water and tarps.

"What we try to do is give them everything, those basic necessities that they need so they don't have to worry about them and focus more on the larger issues that they're trying to deal with," said Tim Mettey, CEO and Disaster Relief Coordinator.

The team planned to continue distribution from their central location Wednesday morning and then go street to street with products in the afternoon.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
