ETTRICK, VA (WWBT) -

Winston-Salem State University plans to file a formal complaint with the CIAA and NCAA over an alleged attack on their quarterback by Virginia State University football players.

WSSU's quarterback, Rudy Johnson, told reporters he was in a bathroom during a sports banquet Friday when several VSU players began taunting him. He told reporters he was hit by at least two people, and stomped on by as many as five people. He had a black eye and said he had sore ribs and a headache as a result of the attack.

The two teams were set to play on Saturday for the CIAA championship, but the game was canceled after the attack. WSSU Chancellor Donald Reaves wants VSU to forfeit the game and have WSSU named CIAA champions.

Reaves said he felt WSSU was damaged in terms of economic loss, as they were set to host the championship game. He also felt the team was damaged in terms of rankings, as they dropped in the seedings and will not have to play this weekend instead of getting a bye week.

Virginia State University announced earlier Monday it would conduct in investigation into the incident and said the full facts of what took place have not yet come to light. The university also said the media reports, which implicated four to five VSU players, were overblown.

VSU officials also apologized to Johnson and WSSU, as well as its own community and fans. VSU suspended running back Lamont Britt indefinitely, pending the investigation. The university says WSSU campus police interviewed three others, but only Britt was charged. He now faces a misdemeanor assault charge.

WSSU will now host Slippery Rock University out of Pennsylvania Saturday in the NCAA Division- II playoffs. VSU was ruled ineligible for the playoffs as a result of Friday's fight, leveling a blow to an otherwise impressive 9-1 campaign.

Britt's next court hearing will be December 9.
