Calvary's Burns commits to LSU

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Clutching a folded up baseball cap, Calvary's Sam Burns stood in front of his friends, family and teammates and announced he had made a decision on where he planned to play college golf.

"I have decided to play at LSU," said Burns, who unfolded an LSU cap and placed it on his head.

The junior picked LSU over Alabama and Oklahoma. He said a "weight" had been lifted off his shoulders after coming to his decision. Burns is one of the elite golfers in the country, ranking 7th overall in his class. Burns said he owes a lot of his accomplishments to his mentor, David Toms, a professional golfer and Shreveport native.

"I practice with him out at his academy all the time and he's not only a great person on the course but off the course more importantly. He's helped me a lot and he's a good leader. I think with the career he's had and the ties he has with LSU that's been a pretty big influence."

Toms, who spends a lot of time with Burns because his son, Carter, is close friends with the young golfer, said there is a lot of talent coming out of Northwest Louisiana.

"The program is not only getting a great player but he's a great young man as well. It's just good to see it."

Burns will sign his scholarship with LSU in the fall.
