TUSCALOOSA, AL (RNN) – Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Tubby Smith is no stranger to Southeastern Conference territory.

As part of the Big-12/SEC Challenge, Smith led his team to Tuscaloosa, but left defeated, as the Alabama Crimson Tide (1-1) beat Texas Tech (2-1) 76-65.

Senior guard Trevor Releford had a stellar game with 29 points, five rebounds and a .714 3-point shooting percentage. Releford also went 11-14 at the free throw line. He scored 11 consecutive points in a 100 second period in the first half to set the tone for the game.

Alabama didn't make a 3-point shot in the second half after going 6-of-9 in the first half.

Texas Tech never pulled within eight points of Alabama after the Crimson Tide opened up the second half with a 12-point lead.

Texas Tech junior guard Jordan Tolbert scored 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the Red Raider's first loss of the season.

Smith is in his first year in Lubbock after stints at Georgia (1995-1997), Kentucky (1997-2007) and Minnesota (2007-2013). He won the 1998 NCAA Championship in his first year at Kentucky.

Alabama's next game is at home against the Stillman Tigers on Nov. 18.
