NAACP to host informational meeting on Affordable Care Act

The Shreveport branch of the NAACP is set to host an open meeting Thursday for people who want help understanding the Affordable Care Act, how it works and how to sign up if they want to.

The meeting will take place at the Lakeside Park and Community Center at 2200 Milam Street, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On hand to help answer questions about the ACA and plans set up in the Louisiana Insurance Marketplace will be Jason Geslois, Special Projects Coordinator with the MLK Health Center and navigators for a Healthy Louisiana; Jordan Ring, Navigator Outreach & Events Coordinator with the MLK Health Center; Ann Dumas, Broker with A & A Insurance Group; Ryan Sinitiere with LHEC; and Anisha Williams, Communications Manager with Louisiana Health Cooperative (LAHC).

Described as the state's only non-profit, LAHC is a member-governed health insurance company. They say open enrollment is under way and they want to make sure Louisiana's residents and small employers are informed of all of their options when it comes to getting health insurance coverage.

Beginning in 2014, most people will have to have health insurance or pay an annual penalty to the federal government. The fine for the first year is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child (up to $285 per family), or 1 percent of your income, whichever is higher; fines grow larger in later years. Statistics show that more than 353,000 Louisiana residents are estimated to be eligible for federal financial subsidies in the form of tax credits to help pay for insurance coverage through the marketplace. Sliding-scale tax credits are available to households earning between $11,490 to $45,960 for an individual or $23,550 to $94,200 (100 - 400% of the federal poverty line) for a family of four. Enrollment ends March 31, 2014 for all coverage plans.

Organizers say that anyone who does not have insurance, currently pays for their own policy, or knows someone who is uninsured or under insured should make plans to attend this meeting on healthcare coverage.
