Veterans were honored in Hattiesburg Monday at the 31st annual Veterans Day Service.
It was a ceremony "honoring all who served" with special recognition for the 2013 Veterans of the Year- the VFW Post 3036 Honor Guard.
"Even as we age, we work extra, extra hard" said Post Captain Lenny Majszak, "to be sharp and precise in what we do, and to always be conscious of who we are and why we are doing this."
This year's grand marshal, Colonel Ken Smith (Ret.), said Veteran's Day and the annual program is a reminder of "knowing that people appreciate what you've done."
"At the same time," said Smith, "it's a chance for us to get together, rub elbows and socialize."
Flags from each branch of the military were posted by members of this year's veterans of the year and the Hattiesburg High School JROTC. For some veterans, it was an emotional moment.
"I can't help but just about cry every time I hear Anchors Aweigh," said Navy veteran Dee Abbott.
The Honor Guard has assisted with 500 military funerals and 250 flag presentations.
