An Ark-La-Tex woman is speaking out, two days after she says she found a young baby left alone in a running SUV in a Walmart parking lot.
Bossier City Police were called-out to the 25-hundred block of Airline Drive in north Bossier just after 1:30 Wednesday morning, November 6th. That's where they found the 11-month old baby boy alone, still asleep inside the SUV.
Kichelle Rowe of Haughton had made that overnight stop to Walmart because she needed to buy diapers and a plunger for out-of-town guests.
Rowe remembers thinking it was odd that the SUV that she parked next to was running, when she arrived at 12:45 a.m. and even mentioned it to a security guard on the way inside the store. He later told her he didn't see anyone inside the SUV.
When Rowe came back out 45-minutes later, the SUV was still running. So, she finally looked inside and says that's when she saw the 11-month old baby boy - sound asleep.
At the time, Rowe 'bit her tongue' and says she didn't say anything to the mother, 23 year old Courtney Matthews, when police escorted her out of the store. Rowe recalled, "A lot of things went through my mind. How could you do this? What kind of mother are you? What kind of mother does this with their child? Do you understand how dangerous it is to have a child in a car for any amount of time, especially in the middle of the night, especially with the doors unlocked?"
(Knock on door) "Hello, this is Jeff Ferrell with KSLA News 12..." We tracked down the home of the mother, Courtney Matthews. While we could hear a baby's voice and a woman's voice inside the home, no one answered the door. I later called Matthews. Someone did answer the phone, but then hung up when I identified myself.
KSLA News 12 has confirmed that Matthews is out on bond, on a charge of child desertion. And while police say the child is now in his grandmother's custody, the grandmother and Matthews have the very same address.
