Many questions, few answers at Obamacare hearing & sign-up

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

There were plenty of questions about President Barack Obama's signature health care law on Thursday night for all those who turned out for a public hearing on the Affordable Care Act. But there was only one consistent answer: Fill out an application to get the answers - later.

Nearly a hundred people turned out to the Morning Star Baptist Church on Jewella Avenue in Shreveport for the hearing and sign-up effort, organized by Louisiana State Senator Greg Tarver. Tarver himself started the entire meeting explaining that he didn't know much about 'Obamacare' and that's why he hosted the event.

Joining him were members of the group Southern United Neighborhoods. They helped people with their applications. Once those applications are mailed off the response will tell them what insurance options they can choose from.

As you might imagine, there were lots of questions and confusion from those who attended the gathering. That included 58 year old Don Russell, a self-employed auto-mechanic who told us, "A little bit. But I mean that's why I'm here to find out what's going on. And when I find out what's happening tonight then I'm going to try to sign up if I can afford it."

For help with filling out an application from beginning to end over the phone you can call 1-800-318-2596. You can also go to HEALTHCARE.GOV and click: "Get in-person help in your community." It will ask for your zip code and provide local places you can visit to meet with an 'application assister.'
