SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Some Highland area residents are concerned about a string of burglaries over recent months, with three burglaries happening in just the last month.

In late September, Mark and Pam Scheurenbrad came home to their house in the 300 block of Prospect Street to find their house ransacked and burglarized.

"To be able to get from our stairs, up on there, I don't know how they were able to do it," says Pam.

The couple says the intruders entered through their back window, shattering the glass.

Reportedly more than $1,000 worth of belongings was stolen.

"It's kinda nerve wrecking when you don't know if your things are safe," says Pam.

The family says burglaries are common in their neighborhood.

In the month of September, 11 other homes in District 5 were also reported burglarized. In the past month, 3 reported burglaries have taken place within just blocks of the couples' home.

"For that person, just one burglary, that's enough for them. So it may give them the impression that crime is on the rise," says Cpl. Marcus Hines.

Cpl. Hines says burglaries from last year to this year have gone down by 8%. He says Special Task Forces are used to decrease property crimes throughout the year.

Also, The Shreveport Police Department does offer free home checks. If you plan on being out of town for a long period of time, you can call (318) 673-7300, and officers will check on your house while you are out of town.
