There's a new effort underway to combat bullying. This time it comes in the form of a bill that Louisiana state lawmakers could soon consider down in Baton Rouge. And it comes from a Shreveport state representative.
November 11, observed in the United States in honor of veterans of the armed services and in commemoration of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. In 1954 it was renamed from Armistice Day and given the added significance of honoring veterans.
In addition to honoring veterans with ceremonies and tributes, many businesses offer special discounts and "freebies" for veterans. Click here for details.

Monday, Nov. 11:
Parkway High School Veterans Day Tattoo Time: 9 a.m. Place: Parkway High School Gymnasium Each year, Parkway's ROTC presents a most impressive Tattoo Ceremony. This year's theme is "Honoring Those Who Served." The Tattoo Ceremony, a military tradition that dates back more than 300 years, is a pure patriotic show. The ceremony features a re-presentation of the Air Force Cross to Colonel George Finck, as well as performances from Drill, Drum Corps and the Dance Line. There will also be a choral selection, Service Medley, viewing of a live bald eagle, an enlistment ceremony of high school students, final roll call including TAPS, flag folding, and more. The public is encouraged to attend.
Princeton Elementary Time: 9 a.m. Place: Gymnasium at Princeton Elementary Princeton puts on a notable Veterans Day program. Major Richard Milton is this year's guest speaker. He is an 04-Major in the U.S. Air Force. A reception will follow in the cafeteria.
Southwood High School Time: 9 a.m. Southwood High School will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony, hosted by their very own US Army JROTC Cowboy Battalion, in front of the school on Monday, November 11, 2013. This ceremony will convene at 9 a.m. and will honor multiple Veterans from through out the community.
Benton High School Time: 9 a.m. Place: Benton High Gymnasium Benton High School JROTC will host a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. November 11. Several high profile guest speakers and visitors will be in attendance. KSLA News anchor, Colonel Pat Simon, will be guest speaker. He is a Commander in the LA National Guard. Among distinguished guests, Lt. Gen. Steven Wilson, Commander of Air Force Global Strike Command, will be attending as well as Col. Andrew Gebara, BAFB Commander.
Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy Time: 9 - 9:30 a.m. Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy for the Junior JROTC will hold their annual Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11 from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
BPCC Veterans Day Commemoration Time: 11 a.m. Location: Building F-Room 203 on the BPCC campus, 6220 E. Texas St., Bossier City, LA. The veterans program, organized by BPCC's Office of Diversity and Multicultural Relations, will include the BPCC Gospel Choir and Northwood High School's Army Junior ROTC, who will conduct the presentation of colors. LSU Shreveport annual Veterans Day commemorative program Time: 11 a.m. LSUS will stage its annual Veterans Day commemorative program at 11 a.m. at the flagpole in the center of the campus, 1 University Place, east off Youree Drive south of Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. The program, dedicated to all prisoners of war and those still missing in action, will feature the state's most highly decorated living resident veteran, retired Army Maj. Ronald Chatelain, as guest speaker. Chatelain, who served two tours in Vietnam, earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with "V" device and Oak Leaf Cluster, five Purple Heart medals and the Army Achievement medal also with "V" device. Cope Middle School Time: 1:50 p.m. Place: Gymnasium Cope Middle School's annual Veterans Day Program will be at 1:50 p.m. All military parents and family members are invited to attend. The school's bands and choirs will perform. Students will also be reading patriotic essays and military students will be recognized. This year, members of Cope's newly formed Military Club will share what their organization is about and host all military guests at a reception in the library following the assembly.
Benton Middle School Time: 1:45 p.m. Place: Benton Middle gymnasium State Representative Henry Burns will be guest speaker
Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia is hosting its annual Veterans Day Memorial Service from 12:30-1 p.m. on November 11, 2013, in front of Harton Theatre in the mall at SAU.A reception will follow the tribute at the SAU Veterans Resource Center at 208 Nelson Hall. The public is encouraged to attend the tribute and reception and to wear patriotic colors.
Broadmoor Baptist Church of Shreveport Veteran's Day tribute Broadmoor Baptist Church Military Ministry Committee will present a one hour tribute to veterans with special guest speaker former Governor Buddy Roemer beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Reception for Veterans in Vivian Frances Rebecca Harrison Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter will hold a Reception for Veterans beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Vivian Railroad and Station Museum, 100 W. Front St. in Vivian. Later that day, the Vivian Town Council will be recognizing Veterans from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at 112 W. Alabama in Vivian.
Veteran's Day Program in Many There will be a Veterans Day Program in Many, LA on Hwy 191 at Disabled American Veterans meeting Hall at 11:00 a.m. Program will be held for POW's and MIA's. Also will have Memorial Service for area veterans who passed away during last 6 months. The DAV Hall is located at 29340 Hwy 191. Public is invited.
Veteran's Day Service in Natchitoches The Natchitoches Parish Veterans and Memorial Park Committee will host a traditional Veterans Day Service on Nov. 11 at 2:00 in the downtown Park located on the corner of St. Denis and 2nd Street. Area veterans, friends, and families will have the opportunity to visit the new park and monument prior to full completion and dedication expected after the first of the year. This ceremony will be proceeded by a Sunday Car and Bike show fund raiser on the riverfront hosted by the Northwestern State University ROTC. For more information call 318-357-5157.
Veteran's Day Program at Grambling State University 2013 Veteran's Day Program starting at 11:00 a.m. at Grambling State University in the Favrot Student Union, Black & Gold Room. Marshall Mall annual Veterans Day Program Time: 11 a.m. The Marshall Mall will host their annual Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11. The keynote speaker is decorated Vietnam Veteran and former Shreveport Airport Director (and current East Texas Regional Airport Director) Roy Miller. Info: (903) 938-8373.
Minden Veterans Day Parade Time: 5 p.m. In honor of Minden's veterans, a parade will be held at 5PM in downtown Minden. Jerry Madden who is spearheading the parade says, "Any veterans and their families who would like to participate in the parade are invited to load up a pick up or trailer, their families and their American flags to help celebrate Veterans Day." Northwest LA Veterans Home - Veterans Day Celebration Please join the Northwest LA Veterans Home in Bossier City for their annual Veterans Day Celebration. Celebration begins with a parade at the Veterans Home starting at 9:30 a.m. and featuring local high schools and Veteran service organizations. SPAR hosts Veterans Day program, health and employment fair Time: 9:30 a.m. On Monday, November 11, 2013, Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (City of Shreveport) will honor our Veterans with a Veterans Day Celebration at Airport Park Community Center (6500 Kennedy Drive). The program begins at 9:30 AM and features retired Master Sgt. Sandy Franks as guest speaker. The public is invited.
Then, on Thursday, November 14, 2013, SPAR, in conjunction with Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, will host a Health and Employment Fair for Veterans at Airport Park Community Center (6500 Kennedy Drive). The fair is from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The public is invited.
