LITTLE RIVER CO., AR (KSLA) -

Detectives say someone ripped off the steel beams from beneath a bridge spanning the Red River between Bowie County, Texas and Little River County in Arkansas.

The metal was discovered missing Thursday on the busy concrete and steel bridge along Hwy 41 South, known locally as the Index Bridge.

From underneath the bridge on Friday, Little River County Sheriff Gary Gregory pointed out where the bandits yanked the steel beams that help reinforce the span. "Up here if you'll notice the brackets that were attached, the cross members attached to, these are removed all the way across the bridge."

The Arkansas Highway Department is working on replacing the beams. So far, they say there is no threat the bridge will fail without the missing pieces.
