CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Dozens of Fair Park students protested Friday afternoon, after learning that their high school could be taken over as a charter school.

Chanting "Save our school!" the students marched to the corner around Noon on Friday, holding up signs that said "No More Charter Schools" and "NO RSD." They asked drivers to stopped at the lights to sign their petition.

"We are protesting to save our school so that our school will not be shut down or turned into a charter school because we like it just the way we are," explained Fair Park High School senior Levada Tate.

Fair Park is on the Caddo Parish list of failing schools, and has been for 8 years. "I feel like, with the new principal, things are going to be much better, but with time," Tate says. "If we don't have time and everybody is talking about time, what do we have left?" Tate says.

The Caddo Parish School Board has a submitted a plan for Fair Park to the state. "It's up to the state," says Fair Park High School Principal James Outley. "Once we give our proposal to the state, it's up to them to determine whether or not the school is chartered."

If the state does not approve that plan, and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education agrees, they will take Fair Park High School.

Many students, like Kira Sibley, are hoping that will not be the case. "By me being a junior, I just want to be able to graduate from Fair Park and have that on my diploma that I was a student at Fair Park."
