NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man accused of driving through a DWI checkpoint and almost hitting agents on scene has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Johnnie Williams was arrested in connection to the incident Friday after being released from the hospital for treatment of K9 bites.

Williams is accused of leading several law enforcement agencies on a chase after refusing to stop at 15th and Market Streets around 1:30 Friday morning, almost hitting two officers.

A New Hanover County Deputy pursued the vehicle through the city and ended up on Castle Hayne Rd. and N. 23rd St.

According to Sgt. Brewer with the New Hanover Co. Sheriff's Office, agencies involved were able to perform a pit maneuver on the suspect's vehicle.

Upon being stopped, Williams refused to come out of the vehicle, so the K9 unit was used to get him out of the vehicle.

Williams was charged with speeding to elude arrest, reckless driving, and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.
