NSU Lady Demons picked to finish eighth in Southland

Posted: Updated:

With seven letterwinners and reigning freshman of the year Janelle Perez returning, the Northwestern State women's basketball team was picked for eighth place by the coaches and sports information directors in the 2013-14 Southland Conference preseason polls the league office announced on Wednesday.

Last season the women's basketball program was picked in last place, but was able to advance to the Southland Conference Tournament and defeated four of the top five teams in the final league standings.

"We, as a staff, don't put much emphasis on preseason polls or rankings. We won't change our approach or direction as a result," said second year co-head coach Brooke Stoehr.  "We will continue to work each day to prepare ourselves for the season."

Among the seven returning letterwinners are: standout Trudy Armstead, last season's leading rebounder Jasmine Bradley, second-leading scorer Keisha Lee, and sixth-year senior Meredith Graf.   Six of the seven returners have significant starting experience.

Along with the returners, Northwestern State will debut eight newcomers; two are junior college transfers and six are freshmen.

The Lady Demons finished the 2012-13 season with a 12-18 overall record, and a 7-11 league record.  They knocked off three teams that advanced to postseason tournaments (Sam Houston, Oral Roberts, and McNeese State).

"We're working everyday to win championships whether the league, coaches, or media picks us last-like they did last year- or first," said Stoehr.  "We're going to have the same mentality; my concern is where we are at the end of the season."

Stephen F. Austin was picked in the top spot followed by Oral Roberts, Nicholls, and McNeese State.

Sam Houston was picked to finish fifth in the coaches' poll followed by Central Arkansas, Lamar, NSU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans and Houston Baptist.

The SIDs selected Sam Houston and Lamar in a tie for fifth.  Central Arkansas was picked in sixth followed by NSU, SLU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UNO, and HBU.

Northwestern State will open the 2013-14 season at home on Nov. 8 with Southern Arkansas at 5:30.  The men will follow that game shortly after with LeTourneau.
