La Tech holds first basketball exhibition game Wednesday

RUSTON, LA (KSLA/Louisiana Tech Sports Information) -

The 2013-14 basketball season has finally arrived as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs get ready to face Arkansas-Monticello in an exhibition game to be played on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. inside the historic Scotty Robertson Memorial Gym.

This will mark the first time since Feb. 25, 1982 that the Bulldogs will play a basketball game in Memorial Gym and will be the first of two exhibition contests for LA Tech as they tip off the new season.  However, it will be hard pressed for any Bulldog fan to find a new face amongst the squad.

The ‘Dogs return a whopping 11 players with a combined 20 years of Division I college basketball experience.

"We are very excited to be able to compete against someone else, and hopefully we will be able to get off to a good start this season," said head coach Michael White.  "Our rotation is definitely in question as we have many capable guys.  Offensively, we are keeping our fingers crossed in the hope that we can find an early rhythm and some efficiency."

Amongst the players returning to the court are nine of the top 10 scorers from last season including its top scorer Raheem Appleby.  The team also features its top rebounder and shot blocker Michale Kyser and the top assist and steals man Kenneth Smith.

Add to that four seniors in Kenyon McNeail, Cordarius Johnson, Jaron Johnson and Chris Anderson and you have a loaded and experienced bunch that is dead set on reaching the NCAA Tournament, something that eluded the ‘Dogs last season despite earning a Western Athletic Conference regular season championship, winning 27 games and making an appearance in the Top 25.

"Although we will not be evaluating many new guys, we will still be evaluating our returners as we make decisions on playing time, roles and the like," White added.

Another thing that happened last season was this same exhibition matchup as LA Tech faced the Boll Weevils to start the 2012-13 campaign.  The only noticeable difference this season will be the new venue in which they play.

The Bulldogs came out on top, 72-44, in the Thomas Assembly Center with Kyser leading the way with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Boll Weevils return four players and welcome 10 new members.

The Bulldogs will host another exhibition on Nov. 4 versus Southern Arkansas at 6:30 p.m. before beginning their regular season opener on Nov. 8 at Saint Mary's.

Season tickets are currently on sale for both the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters as fans can call 318-257-3631, email techtickets@latech.edu or log onto www.LATechSports.com.

Live stats will be available through the link provided on the official website schedule page. Twitter users can get updates of the game as well by following @LATechHoops.

Admission is free for the exhibition contest.
