Principal makes walk to help keep "Kids on the Move"

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

As kids were getting ready for school Friday morning, Cherokee Park Elementary Principal Tyrone Burton wasn't at his desk. Instead he was over three miles away, wearing athletic shoes.

Principal Burton made the walk from the intersection at Milam and Hearne Avenues to his school as part of the "Kids on the Move" grant program, funded by the State of Louisiana to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage students to walk to school.

Through this grant, Cherokee Park is able to improve its campus by expanding sidewalks, adding a bike rack, and improving the walking trail.

Burton says it's important for students to see him walk to school.

"Children learn through example, and as a principal I have to set the example for them. So (for them to see) me walk to school helps them to understand that this is a healthy concept that they can achieve."

The students cheered their principal on as he arrived to the school's campus after his hour-long walk.

Shortly after he returned, the school celebrated its 14th Annual Learning Carnival.
