SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Caddo Parish School Board has voted to select Theodis Goree as the next superintendent of schools.

Before the final vote selecting Goree, the board deadlocked in a 6-6 vote split between Goree and Timothy Magner.

The board went into executive to discuss their next move at 4:23 p.m., and emerged just before 5 p.m. to make the final vote of 9-3 in favor of Goree.

It's believed that Magner offered a selfless gesture in order to avoid another deadlock.

One of the board members said that during the executive session one of the candidates called and said that he wanted to see the process moving forward.

The special meeting convened Friday at 4 p.m. to choose from among 3 finalists, following a week of interviews. It is the culmination of a second search that began after the first ended in August in tie vote between current interim superintendent Mary Nash Robinson and John Dilworth. Nash Robinson ended up bowing out and agreeing to serve as the interim superintendent and the school board opted to re-open the search.

This time around, the board considered Terrence Brown, Theodis Goree and Tim Magner. They were selected from a list of 7 candidates offered by the same Nebraska firm that conducted the first search.

Goree is currently serving as Area Superintendent of Mansfield, TX ISD. He told the board during his interview on Tuesday that he brings a relationship building and personable personality that will ultimately help him in reaching his goals to help Caddo Parish Schools. "First, the curriculum issue, which is easy. I think I can handle that. The biggest challenge will be the budget, because there will have to be cuts. Cut and dry, in order to have a balanced budget you have to make cuts. Another goal will be to really be around the community and the triangular relationship of the home, the school, and the community, and that will be one of my biggest strengths."

Goree is expected to start his new job on December 1, 2013.
