Authorities identify Smith County high speed chase suspect

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Jean Dark, one man was arrested after a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon.

The chase began near Bullard when police received a call about an erratic driver. A Cherokee County constable and a sheriff's deputy attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle fled north on Highway 69 towards Tyler. The Smith County Sheriff's Department, DPS and Tyler Police Department pursued the vehicle into Tyler, where it then merged onto Toll 49.

DPS vehicles pursued the suspect, identified 57-year-old Garland Wayne Shattuck of Chandler onto Toll 49. According to authorities, Shattuck tried to hit a DPS Trooper when the trooper set his spike strip out on Toll 49. They also say he drove the wrong way down Broadway at times.

The chase came to an end after the vehicle merged onto west Interstate 20.

Shattuck was taken to a local hospital, and after being released from the hospital was booked into the Smith County Jail.

He faces a charge of evading arrest or detention with a previous conviction. His bond is set at $2,000.
