Hotel boom slows in Bossier

Posted: Updated:

Bossier City has more than 30 hotels and now a new hotel will soon be constructed near the Horseshoe Casino near the Boardwalk.

But this hotel boom is slowing down according to the Bossier Parish Metropolitan Planning Commission.

"We had a boom of a lot of hotels being constructed during the peak of the Haynesville Shale drilling," Executive Director of the planning commission Sam Marsiglia said. "Hotel occupancy rate over here stays pretty steady. It has slowed down somewhat."

Over the last 30 years, Bossier has maintained a steady growth rate in all of the censuses, according to Marsiglia.

"People perceive this is a good place to live, good public school system, low crime rate," he said.

New hotels aren't the only way Bossier is growing. As more people move into the parish, more development takes place.

For example, in North Bossier just off Airline Drive, north of Interstate 220 at the Sterling Bossier Shopping Center, a Sam's Club is in the plans to be built just next to the Academy Sports store.

Ground has been broken for the new warehouse grocery store and construction is in the beginning stages.

Marsiglia said things may be slowing down now as far as development, but the new year has big plans for Bossier Parish.

"Any new development must start with this office to make sure it's zoned property and being developed properly by the zoning regulations. This is our normal quiet time of the year. Our developers are kind of slowing down for the holidays. It will pick back up shortly after the first of the year," he said.

In the plans, according to Marsiglia, is a new subdivision in the works for the Haughton area. This new neighborhood will have approximately 145 new lots. Other residential areas are also adding new units, or lots, to sell.

Marsiglia added the movie industry plays a big role in economic growth for Bossier, making a need for more hotels and other amenities in the area.
