Man found with gunshot wound during traffic stop arrested

A Shreveport man who accidentally shot himself in his car Wednesday afternoon is expected to survive, but when he gets out of the hospital, he'll be going to jail.

Police say an officer spotted 28-year-old James McCullough speeding near the intersection of Southern Avenue and St. Vincent around 3:15 p.m.

When the officer made contact with McCullough, he discovered that the man at the wheel was suffering a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

He was taken to University Hospital Shreveport with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say they gathered information from McCullough that suggested that he had accidentally shot himself while parked at another location while attempting to re-position a handgun that was stored in the vehicle.

After being struck, McCullough tried to drive himself to the hospital. Police say there were 2 other people in the car with him.

He is expected to fully recover, and when he is released from the hospital, police say he will be booked into the Shreveport City Jail for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant on an unrelated matter discovered during the investigation.

No charges were filed in connection with the shooting and no additional arrests were made.
