ORLANDO, FL (CENTRAL FLORIDA NEWS 13/CNN) – Two high school seniors with Down syndrome were named their school's homecoming king and queen.
According to the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida, Bubba Hunter and Semone Adkins are the first teens with Down syndrome to be nominated to the homecoming court in that part of the state of Florida.
Friends say it was the pair's positive personalities that got them elected.
The high school's football team captain – another homecoming court nominee – talked about why he and his classmates nominated Hunter and Adkins.
"We are not doing this because we feel bad for them or anything like that," said football captain Hayden Griffitts. "We are doing this because we genuinely like Bubba and Semone."
Griffitts says in addition to being named homecoming king over him, Hunter also beats him at arm wrestling from time to time.
