NATCHEZ, LA (KSLA) -

When you think about people living in Natchez, most people automatically think Natchez, Mississippi, but did you know there is a Natchez, Louisiana? Just 7 miles south of Natchitoches, this small village operates all on it's own.

Natchez resident Mike Davis has lived in the village for more than 25 years.  He says the idea to build the village started a long time ago.

Natchez resident, O.B. Nora the name Natchez came from a great chief of one of the Indian tribes.

Natchez is a place where everybody knows their neighbor.  Village Mayor Edna Jones says more the majority of the village is African American and nearly all of the residents own their own homes.  The old saying that "It takes a village" rings true here.  Mayor Jones says families often take care of each other.

Jones is a jack of all trades.  Not only is she mayor, she is an enforcer.  She is also known as a judge, a title she says the Louisiana Municipal Association Notebook gives her.  Court is held every month and she hears and rules on cases.

While many of the ancestors who built the village have passed away, the village is very much alive and well.

The Mayor says there is a little crime in the village, but adds the most action the villagers see is work going on with the sewer.  Mayor Jones adds that she has had opportunities to go and move other places, but she always wanted to stay in Natchez.
