NEW YORK (CNN) - Elizabeth Smart has penned a new memoir on the nine months she was held in captivity.
Smart was 14 in 2002 when she was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City.
She told CNN's Anderson Cooper part of the reason she wrote the book was to help victims who struggle to move on with their lives after a violent crime.
"When I started considering writing the book that's really one of the main reasons it drove me, because I want to reach out to those survivors and those victims," Smart said. "I want them to know that these things do happen, but it doesn't mean you have to be defined by it for the rest of your life. You can move forward and you can be happy."
The memoir, called 'my story' was released Monday.
