BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

A Bossier City man has won a years worth of free ice cream after he entered a writing contest explaining why he likes Blue Bell ice cream so much.

Kevin says he learned about the contest when his sister-in-law called him. "She said, 'Kevin you like Blue Bell right?' I said, 'Is the Pope Catholic?'" Smith explained.

Smith is a retired Air Force airman. In his essay, Smith described the great lengths he's gone to bring his family some Blue Bell ice cream to North Carolina, where it wasn't sold at the time. He loaded the ice cream on an Air Force plane, but things didn't go exactly as planned.

"I was just so excited and I couldn't wait to open the cooler and I opened it up and my heart just sank," said Smith and explained there were a few things he did not take into account like pressure change due to the high altitude. "All of the ice cream had split through the seams of each container and the only thing left was small, barely pint size helpings of each. I cried, but we all soon laughed about it and you bet we ate what remained," Smith wrote in his entry.

"As I looked in this thing and there was a chocolate mess in the cooler and through all the giggling about it, we decide, you know, you can probably still eat this," Smith recalls.

Blue Bell received more than 1,800 entries during the month-long contest. Smith and the eight other finalists were awarded a year's supply of Blue Bell Ice Cream along with several other prizes.

Now he's in the running for the grand prize to win a VIP trip to Blue Bell headquarters in Brenham, Texas. You can cast your vote until Friday October 4 to help Smith win. Click here to vote.
