Lady Demons begin season with first practice

With a trip back to the Southland Conference Tournament and even further in mind, the Northwestern State women's basketball team's season officially opened Monday when the Lady Demons started practice.

"With the start of every year there's always the anticipation of the first official practice," said co-head coach Brooke Stoehr.  "We are very excited to be able to put the team through a workout for an extended period of time. This is always one of my favorite days of the year. It's exciting for the players as they get to transition into our normal practice schedule."

Stoehr and her husband, Scott, open their second season as a co-head coaching tandem at Northwestern State.  Last season they led NSU to a 12-18 overall record and a 7-11 showing in conference with a trip to the league tournament for the first time in two years.

"I expect to see lots of players giving great effort and competing on a daily basis. We've really tried to establish a competitive culture through our recruiting, drill work and our strength and conditioning," said Stoehr. "I also expect to see some big eyes and a few mistakes being made with the youth and new faces on our roster."

The Lady Demons return seven letterwinners with eight newcomers in the 2013-14 season; highlighted by the return of seniors Trudy Armstead and Meredith Graf who were redshirted a year ago.

"They (Armstead and Graf) have done a great job of leading in the offseason and helping the younger players adjust," said Stoehr. "I think last year was good for them to watch and learn our system. Now it will be a matter of using that time and translating it into actual game speed and action."

NSU opens its season at home with Southern Arkansas on Nov. 8 at 5:30 as a part of a doubleheader with the men's team who will host Letourneau.

Northwestern State will host the annual Northwestern State Basketball Tipoff showcase Thursday from 5-7 in Prather Coliseum.  Admission is free and is the event is a chance for fans to shop for best-available season ticket locations.
