Students and faculty have been allowed to return to University Elementary School following an evacuation prompted by the smell of natural gas.
Caddo Parish schools spokesman Victor Mainiero confirms students and faculty, totaling just over 1,000 people, were evacuated from the building on the campus of University Elementary School around 2 p.m. That's in the 9900 block of Smitherman Drive in south Shreveport.
Mainiero says the evacuation was ordered as a precaution, after someone detected the odor of natural gas inside the school cafeteria.
The Shreveport Fire Department and Centerpoint responded to the scene. They say they have determined that there is no gas leak.
