SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Some East Texas residents say are furious that their neighborhood has become a dumping ground for people trying to get rid of unwanted dogs and cats. Several people living on Central Lane off of County Road 370, south of I-20, say people have been abandoning their animals in this neighborhood for years. Two young dogs are the latest to be abandoned in the area.

"We've had this ongoing problem of people dumping animals out here expecting us to take care of them," says resident Joyce Slough.

Neighbors say the dumping has become a regular occurrence.

"At least once a month, we're seeing two or maybe five dogs dumped out here. Plus we're getting a lot of cats dumped out here," says neighbor Freddie Wade.

They say they have called authorities numerous times, but no one has been caught dumping the animals.

"They think people in the country will keep them, but we can only keep so many. We have to take them to the no kill shelter, or try to. It's usually full," Slough says.

"Its bad and it getting worse, it seems like, over the last few years," says neighbor Pat Dilday.

Many have taken in the dogs and cats, but have reached their limit with how many they can care for.

"Its heartbreaking to walk out in your yard in the morning and see stray animals running loose or looking for food. Tearing in the trash looking for something to eat," Dilday says.

The people here feel for the animals and are angry at those who dump them.

"If you don't want an animal take it to a shelter, find a home for it, but don't leave it out here for us to do it for you," says Slough.
