BRAVE program gets boost with $1 million grant

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Crime fighting in Baton Rouge got a shot in the arm with the award of a $1 million grant to fund the BRAVE initiative.

The money comes from the United States Justice Department and will be used to target crime in the Istrouma, Greenville extension, Eden Park, and Mid-town neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are referred to as "hot spots" and account for nearly half of the city's crime.

"The really good news is that the U.S. Department of Justice awarded the city of Baton Rouge approximately $1 million to create a comprehensive plan that addresses priority crime issues in four interconnecting neighborhoods along the border of 70805 and 70802," said Mayor-President Kip Holden.

The grant BRAVE received came from a larger Federal Neighborhood Revitalization initiative that helps distressed communities.
