KSLA News 12 Editorial: Sept. 23rd-Safe House

This is the sign in front of every fire station in Shreveport.

It reads "Safe House." The idea is that anyone in distress is encouraged to go to their nearest fire station for help.

Events that have allegedly taken place at Fire Station Number 8 in Shreveport unfortunately put a dark cloud over that idea.

So far, five firemen, including a captain, have been arrested and charged with a variety of crimes stemming from the alleged abuse of two mentally disabled men. According to prosecutors, this activity had been going on at the fire station for some time.

From a young age, we have all been taught to look up to firemen. And after the tragedy of 9/11, the bravery and sacrifice of firemen have taken on a whole new meaning.

The good news is, the vast majority of our firemen are honorable public servants. It's too bad the Shreveport department now has a black eye because of some at Fire Station Number 8.

I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.
