J.D. Clifton staying fit, fighting childhood obesity

September is National Childhood Obesity Month and students at J.D. Clifton are joining the fight against the disease.

"We wanted to educate our students, our parents and our faculty and staff on things we can do in order to get fit," said Pamela Bell, Clifton's principal. "We wanted to do healthy exercises and make the right eating choices."

"Fit Day" is a new Calcasieu Parish School Board initiative and it's happening at schools all across the parish.
At J.D. Clifton, PE Coach Charlie Kinnison works with a wellness warrior to facilitate activities and lessons to learn about healthy lifestyles.
"Them making me smile ... that's the best part really about your day as a teacher," said Kinnison. "If you can get participation and kids enjoying what their doing then it's worth it."
"Our health based nurse who is going to do Zumba classes throughout the year with our students," said Bell.

While it's fun for now, these students and faculty are addressing a real nationwide problem. According to statistics, nearly one out of every three children in America is overweight or obese. That's 33 percent.

Even still, these J.D. Clifton kids will keep moving

"We're looking for great and exciting things to come with getting fit and being healthy," said Bell.
