JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, in remembrance of the nation's service members held prisoner or who are still missing.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other top officials made remarks Friday at a national ceremony held at River Parade Field at the Pentagon.

The event included formal military honors.

The Department of Defense has more than 600 people dedicated to the worldwide mission of accounting for the more than 83,000 missing service members from conflicts as far back as World War II.

Closer to home, in Jennings, some students welcomed a Vietnam War veteran to their school on Friday.

Mallory J. Lessord and his fellow veterans were invited to speak to Jennings High School's seventh and eighth grade classes on Friday morning.

They held a POW/MIA ceremony as well as a "Killed in Action" ceremony.

"These young men and women that give their lives for our country. That's the true hero. It's an honor for me and my fellow brothers that are going to be performing this ceremony, to do it, it's an honor for us to do it," Lessord said.
