SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Rotary Club of Shreveport-Downtown will host its 5th year of dragon boat racing on the Red River Saturday.

This year, there are 29 teams registered to hit the water for a feverishly paddled sprint from the Texas Street Bridge to the first railroad bridge by Sci-Port.

Each team is composed of a minimum of 20 paddlers and a drummer who beats the cadence.

But the Red River Dragon Boat Festival is not for fun and bragging rights. Rich Brontoli with the Downtown club says it's also for funds that will go to local non-profit who apply for the money through grant applications.

This Spring, Brontoli says they gave out around $20,000 raised last year in all to a handful of non-profits in Shreveport and Bossier City to fund projects in the areas of education, social services and community development. Click here to view the 2013 Civic Grants distributed.

The money raised comes from entry fees and sponsorships, and Brontoli says, goes right back into the community.

The festival is free to the public and will kick of with an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. The races begin at 9. Things should wrap up around 2:30 p.m.

The main staging area is at the Shreveport Riverfront Park.
