BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Some lucky locals cashed in on a major airlines mistake. They got roundtrip airfare from Baton Rouge to Hawaii for only $10.

The United Airlines ticket counter at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport saw its typical foot traffic on Friday.

Passenger, David Hertel, was taking off on pricey a business trip overseas.

"The flight to Houston I think is around $600 to $800, and the flight to Singapore is $8,000," Hertel said.

Carrie Arceneaux and her family were headed to Alabama.

"How much does a ticket from Baton Rouge to Birmingham usually cost," reporter Cheryl Mercedes asked.

"Way more than you would think, about $300," Arceneaux said.

"What if I told you [that] you could go to Hawaii roundtrip for $10 instead," Mercedes asked.

"Sold," Arceneaux responded.

For a short time on Thursday United.com advertised a long list of flights to paradise. There were flights to Hawaii listed for $10.

Baton Rouge resident, Josh Dean, said he saw the fare and went for it.

"I was expecting about $1,100 or $1,200 for the tickets and I got them for $10," Dean said.

Dean said a friend who works for the airline told him the fare was legit. But it wasn't until he got a confirmation email from United that something clicked.

"I realized it was real when I got the confirmation email that said your flight's booked. You're ready to go. I immediately thought I should go back and buy some more tickets but the website was down by that point," Dean said.

United reported an error on its website caused the airline to sell tickets from $0 to $10. However, United has not said how many dream tickets were sold before the airline spotted the error.

"Wow! That's amazing! That's almost like winning the lottery," Arceneaux said.

Dean hit the jackpot. Twenty four hours later, the same roundtrip flight from Baton Rouge to Maui was listed at $1,209.

"I still can't believe it. It's crazy," Dean said.

United released the following statement on Friday, "United has reviewed the error that occurred yesterday (Thursday) and decided that, based on these specific circumstances, we will honor the tickets."
