LOGANSPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A DeSoto Parish firefighter is in ICU at LSU Hospital after being injured while fighting a woods fire Wednesday night. "He had a black eye. He's bleeding from the brain. They don't think it's bad, that it'll quit. And I think that he has a C6 fracture in the back of his neck right here but it's nothing that he can't overcome," DeSoto District 1 Fire Chief, Jack Canton, says.

A spokesperson for DeSoto Fire District 1 says it happened while they were fighting a large woods fire in Logansport along Hwy 191. They were in the process of cutting down a large burning tree when it fell the wrong way and struck Haden Ezernack, knocking him out. Canton says the fire crews decided to cut the tree down because burning ash was blowing off of it and across the road.

He was airlifted to LSU Hospital, where he is now listed in fair condition. "Our protocols were followed pretty much to a tee and it's just one of those things," Canton says.

"I think the fire started on the side of the road, maybe by a cigarette. As dry as it is and the grass build up on the side of the road, I don't think it would be hard to start a fire by a cigarette this time of year," Canton says.
