KSLA News 12 Editorial: September 12th-Nursing Home Alert

If you are considering a nursing home for yourself or a loved one, you need to be aware of a new study.

Louisiana and Texas are both ranked near the bottom in the country in overall nursing home care. On the Families for Better Care map, the states in red get an "F" rating. Those in pink get a "D"rating.

So what causes the low rating?

A number of factors according to the Families for Better Care study. Staffing is key. Nursing homes that have a lot of professional nurses and frontline care givers get the best grades. Widespread abuse and neglect cause low scores. The study found that one in five nursing homes abused, neglected or mistreated residents.

Of course, not all individual nursing homes in Louisiana and Texas get low scores. There are excellent nursing homes in these states…but this report card should be a wake up call for state lawmakers to make sure safeguards are put in place to protect elderly and disabled residents.

By the way, Alaska is considered the best nursing home state.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.
