MAGNOLIA – Southern Arkansas University is hosting a 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance 2013 event from 12:15 – 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in front of Harton Theatre in the University Mall.

Members of the campus and regional community are invited to attend. Parking is available in front of the SAU Reynolds Center, and handicap spaces may be available in the Brinson Art Building parking lot.

Deana Taylor, SAU's community involvement and parent program coordinator, said she was inspired to plan this program because she felt like the events on September 11, 2001, should not be forgotten and that the spirit of service that came out of that tragic day should be encouraged to continue. As such, Taylor made a pledge at www.911day.org to sponsor this event. She encourages others to visit the website and record their own pledge to give back to the community.

"This is a time to come together and remember the events of 9/11 and pass on those memories to another generation," said Taylor. "It is also a national day of service when people can join the ‘I Will' campaign and engage in charitable service."

Taylor has arranged to use SAU's event to collect contributions for the Southern Christian Mission in Magnolia. She said such donations would be a great way for many people to participate in a service project on 9/11.

"The Magnolia Fire Department supports this non-profit organization and SAU wants to add their support through this campus and community event," said Taylor. "Donation items can be brought to the 9/11 ceremony and SAU representatives will transport them to the Mission on behalf of our area firefighters."

Following is the needs list from Southern Christian Mission: trash bags (regular and lawn size), bathroom tissue paper, zip-lock bags (all sizes), sugar, paper towels, bleach, washing powder, soup bowls, dish soap, napkins, spoons, forks, and paper plates.

Taylor, 1983 SAU graduate, returned to SAU over the summer for this new position over community involvement and parent engagement. She is responsible for facilitating and promoting community service between college students and the community.

"I hope to serve as a clearinghouse for individuals or groups looking for ways to get involved in service projects both in Magnolia and across the country. I want to encourage our students to take a broader view of the world and see themselves as citizens beyond their own communities who can help others have better lives.  Perhaps our students can find their passion for a career in the process of volunteering," said Taylor.

She will continue to build on SAU's tradition of success in the realm of community involvement. SAU has earned national recognition by being named for five straight years on the President's Community Service Honor Roll. In 2012, SAU was the only university in Arkansas to earn a spot on the coveted Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. More recently, the initiative by SAU Athletics, "Muleriders in Magnolia," won the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for Community Engagement.

Taylor said being the mother of two recent college graduates has well prepared her for the other half of her job – coordinating activities for parents and family members of SAU students and being available as a campus resource person while the students are at SAU.
