Rain turns Glendale park into river

GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Monday's storms dumped a steady flow of rain, flooding roads across the Valley.

But it's not just roads that are waterlogged; some parks are submerged, too.

"Earlier, it was a pretty nice looking day," said Phoenix-area resident Sam Krause. "You know, nice and overcast. So we figured, why not? We had a raft that we couldn't really use until now."

So Krause and his two friends, Andrew Navarro and Derek Bolinger, decided to take that raft for a ride down Glendale's flooded Thunderbird Paseo Park – which is about four miles long from 51st Avenue and Cactus northwest to 73rd Avenue and Greenway.

"It's kind of just been like a lazy river ride," said Navarro. "(We're) just sitting back. We haven't even been paddling, really."

The 18-year-olds said they hopped into the water near 55th Avenue and Sweetwater Road and floated over basketball courts, football and soccer fields and an 18-hole disc golf course.

"You can see the frisbee-golf things sticking up," said Krause. "So we got to dodge those."

There were other obstacles too – like almost getting stuck in thorny bushes that were sticking out of the water.

"We almost popped our raft," Krause said. "But I think we're good. We've been trying to sit under the bridges for shade - but we've missed every single one."

The ride came to an end near 67 Avenue and Bell Road - where the water turned rough and the guys wisely got out.

"There's not much to do here," Navarro said. "So, I mean, you got to make your own fun - pretty much."

A spokesman for the Glendale Fire Department told CBS5 News rafting in areas not designed for that type of recreation is not a good idea.

Mike Young said people who do this are putting their lives in danger – because you can't see potential hazards under the water or how fast the water's moving down below.
