For parents who can't seem to catch their breath between shuttling their kids to sporting events, school activities and music lessons, there is a way to make life a little easier, at least when it comes to music lessons.

More parents are staying home and letting the instructor come to them through the internet.

Ten-year-old Kaylin Womack takes bass lessons from instructor Alex Atwood. Atwood is based in Tacoma, WA, so Kaylin uses Skype to take her lessons.

Kaylin's mom, Rayann Womack, wanted to find a way for her daughter to take lessons without transporting the huge instrument in the car once a week.

Rayann Womack found out about and searched for a bass instructor.  At first, Kaylin wasn't sold on the idea of taking a music lesson through Skype.

"I was like, well, that might be kind of hard because ... will he be able to look at my fingering?  There's a lot of fingerings," Kaylin said. "Then my mom was like, 'We'll just have to give it a try and see if it works,' and we tried it and it actually worked out pretty good."

"You lose a little bit, but what you make up for ... not having to lug the instrument around and possibly damaging it.  She's more comfortable here in her home," Rayann Womack said.

Atwood said he does most of his lessons over Skype with students from all over the country.  Even kids in the same town sometimes opt for a lesson using Skype.  Atwood understands why a lot of families enjoy the convenience of an online lesson.

"They don't have to feel like they have to clean it up for me or anything like that.  I think it's much more comfortable for people, not having a stranger in their home and not having to go anywhere as well," Atwood said.
